The Dream of the Rood is
a poem depicting Christ’s sacrifice of himself for all of mankind by dying on
the cross. This epic story is told from the point of view of the Cross itself.
This poem perfectly demonstrates and describes the beauty of the cross and what
it truly symbolizes for Christians, which is salvation. It also explains the
sadness, pain, and suffering of Christ, our Redeemer and Savoir on that rugged
cross. At one point, you can’t even tell the difference between Christ and the
rood, because they are one united symbol, enduring a tragic defeat for our sins.
However, upon His resurrection the cross, just like Christ, rises up, and is
revered, and beheld as an important emblem that reminds us of what Jesus did
for us on that cross and provides us with the hope of salvation and an eternal
life to spend with Him.
